Historic day as Abbey United FC fields their first girls’ team
Abbey United FC’s u12 side
Friday the 16th of September was an historic day for Abbey United F.C as they fielded their first ever girls’ team. This was the result of several months of hard work by the committee, coaches, and volunteers to get Abbey United re-established and this made the occasion hugely rewarding for all involved. From the outset there was a desire and emphasis on developing the girl’s side of the club, to offer football for girls in the East City/ Cranmore Area.
Coaches Lisa, Jeffrey and Christopher are to be commended with the focus of the team being fun and involvement, rather than results. It will take time for a newly formed team to be competing against the other teams in the league, but that isn’t a priority. Keeping the girls active, getting them out in the fresh air, making football fun, and a safe space for the girls is the emphasis.
“It was a momentous occasion to see the first ever Abbey United girls team enjoy their first match in a competitive league here at McSharry Park. We are extremely proud to have made history today. We are very proud of our girls and the excellent team spirit they show both on and off the pitch. It’s about showing that football is a sport for everyone, and we as coaches strive to encourage and instil this sentiment within the club itself and the girls we coach. We would like to thank Merville United for an entertaining game, and referee Philip McLoughlin for his guidance to both teams. A big thank you to all the parents and guardians of our team, and to our community for their continued support, we could not do this without you.”
Head coach Lisa Wallace
The game itself, it was end to end stuff as the girls fought hard, never giving Merville a rest. A huge cheer erupted through Ray McSharry Park as Abbey United girls scored their first ever goal. Ultimately Merville came out on top winning 2-1, but the result was irrelevant for Abbey, they fielded their first girls’ team, they scored their first goal, and they had fun and made memories with their friends. Isn’t that what it’s all about?
