Sligo BID and SSRP Celebrate Successful Couch to 5K
SSRP teamed up with Sligo BID to bring a Couch to 5K Challenge as part of Sligo’s Night Time Economy Initiative!
Well done to everyone who completed the programme brining community spirit, fun and fitness to Queen Maeves Square
This Autumn, Sligo Business Improvement District (BID) and the Sligo Sport & Recreation Partnership (SSRP) were thrilled to partner for the ultimate Couch to 5K Challenge, part of Sligo’s dynamic Night Time Economy project. This beginner-friendly program was designed to help participants build fitness, boost confidence, and increase stamina in a supportive, community-centred environment.
Starting and finishing at Queen Maeve’s Square, Sligo’s newest public space, the six-week challenge provided a safe and welcoming option for group evening runs twice a week. The program concluded this week with a celebration where participants received commemorative t-shirts marking their achievements.
One participant shared,
“Signing up for the Couch to 5K programme has been the perfect way for me to reconnect with fitness. It’s been great for my health, but the social side of meeting new people has been fantastic.”
Edel Doran, Sligo Town Night Time Economy Advisor, noted the project’s success, saying,
“This programme was a brilliant offering, and we were delighted to support the Couch to 5K under the Night Time Economy Project. People often don’t realise that the Night Time Economy encompasses everything that happens between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., including your evening run, a local Sligo Rovers match, a yoga class, as well as your evening out in a restaurant or pub. This project aims to further unlock the potential of Sligo town’s Night Time Economy and expand what’s available for all.”
This Couch to 5K has also highlighted Queen Maeve’s Square’s potential as a venue for community health and wellness activities, showcasing its versatility as a public space.
